![]() As a result, you must beat an entire stage to save. For example, if you want to quit a game session after stage one, level three, you have to start again from stage one, level one the next time you start up Super Bomberman R. The one that irks me that most is the inability to save the game after individual levels within a stage. Story mode is a fun but not particularly thrilling affair, as it has two annoying, if not game-breaking, elements. Story mode tasks one player (or two players in local co-op mode) with blasting through 50 levels that are filled with cutesy enemy goons and hulking bosses. Super Bomberman R has two main play modes-Story and Battle-that are designed to keep you planting explosives into the wee hours of the night. As a result, even people who aren't great at weaving in and out of danger can affect the game in fun ways. If you manage to blow up another player, you reenter the fray and your rival is banished in turn to the map's outskirt. In the multiplayer modes, you can harass other players after you've tasted an explosion by hurling bombs back onto the battlefield from a hovercraft that zips along the map's perimeter. There are few moments as hilarious as seeing opponents slide right into your bomb's path and knowing there's absolutely nothing they can do to prevent being blown off the map. One stage, for example, has ice-slicked areas that cause your Bomber-person to slide across the strip in a completely out-of-control fashion. In addition, there are numerous maze designs and properties that force you to alter your approach. The last person standing wins.ĭestroyed blocks reveal power ups, including one that lets you increase an explosion's range and another that lets you pick up and toss planted bombs. As you open navigation lanes, the game becomes a tension-filled game of cat and mouse as you try to blow your opponents to hell while trying not to get smoked yourself. Instead of eating dots, you place comically large bombs onto the playfield to destroy blocks that impede your movement. Like Pac-Man, Super Bomberman R has maze-based gameplay that's immediately accessible to even the most casual gamer.
